No-Prep Reading Lesson: Maya and the Lost Library Card

Teachers · Updated 2026-10-28

Storybook illustration of children finding a library card in a book.

A free four-page reading lesson for grades 3–5: story, vocabulary, comprehension questions, optional deeper-thinking prompts, an exit ticket, and a teacher answer key.

A missing library card becomes a chance to practice problem-solving together. Read Maya and Leo’s story as a class, with a partner, or independently.

Inside the download

This complete four-page lesson includes three student pages and one teacher page. Students explore vocabulary, answer comprehension questions, sequence events, and write about a lost-and-found experience. Two optional Go Further questions invite them to explain how Leo helps and compare solving today’s problem with preventing it next time. A separate exit ticket rounds out the activity.

A little help for the teacher

The final page includes the answer key, discussion guidance for the optional questions, and flexible teaching suggestions. Keep this page for the teacher when copying the student materials.

Make it your own

Read aloud, invite partners to take Maya and Leo’s parts, or let students talk through ideas before writing. The optional questions can be a short discussion, a written extension, or left out—the core activity stands on its own.
