A Little Help Between Activities

Teachers · Updated 2026-10-23

Illustrative classroom scene with a teacher placing an Our next steps routine card beside a notebook while students work in the background.

Free classroom cards and planning pages for grades 3–5. Borrow a ready-made prompt, group-role cards, or early-finisher ideas and make them your own.

You already have a lot of moving pieces in your day. These printable cards and simple planning pages are here to take one small thing off your list. Borrow a page or two, adapt the wording, and keep what works for your class.

No classroom overhaul needed

Your existing routines are the starting point. This free eight-page kit offers a few tools for the moments between activities, with room for the language, pacing, and supports that already help your students.

What is inside?

A fictional grade 4 example moving from partner reading to independent writing; an optional planning page; a ready-made student prompt and a write-in version; four cut-apart group-role cards; four early-finisher option cards; and an optional reflection page with background reading.

Use just what helps

Designed for grades 3–5, the pages can be printed with paper and a pencil on hand. The worked reading example uses your own story and response sheet; those lesson materials are not included. The cards can support activities you already teach, rather than adding a new lesson to prepare.

You know your students best. Adapt the pages alongside your school routines and individual support plans. They offer a little practical help, not a fix for every classroom challenge.

Background reading

The approach draws on AERO guidance on teaching routines and the Center on PBIS brief Creating a Classroom Teaching Matrix. The examples and printables are original Commerce Street Cares materials and have not been classroom-tested or endorsed by those organizations. Source links are included below and in the PDF.
