Ten Minutes, Something Good

Teachers · Substitute teachers · Updated 2026-10-23

Illustrative classroom scene with two students watching a freestanding folded-paper tower and a teacher nearby.

Five short classroom activities for grades 3–5, with printable student pages, simple materials, flexible ten-minute plans, variations, and sample answers.

A lesson wraps up early, the schedule shifts, or you have a few minutes before the next thing. Here are five small activities you can borrow without building a whole new lesson. Pick one that fits the moment, and leave the rest for another day.

Five activities, ready to borrow

The two-sheet tower: build, test, and change a freestanding paper tower using two sheets of scrap paper.

A mystery in the lines: turn an ordinary classroom object into clues and a drawing.

Pattern detective: explore three patterns and explain a possible rule.

Invent a little helper: sketch an invention for an everyday classroom problem. No building or buying needed.

The unexpected delivery: build a short story together, one sentence at a time.

What is in the free download?

The seven-page kit includes a student page for each activity, simple materials and directions, a flexible ten-minute plan, easier and harder variations, and sample responses for teachers. Grades 3–5 are a suggested starting point.

Everyday supplies, flexible timing

Use scrap paper, pencils, and familiar classroom objects. Timings assume materials are ready; shorten the sharing round or save it for later if your class needs more time. Read the prompts aloud or display a page if you would rather skip printing.

Make it fit your students

Drawing, speaking, pointing, and familiar supports are welcome. Use the response methods and supports that already work for your class. These original activities are options to adapt, not a required routine.
